For our Lit Circle group my group was assigned to read The Short Bus by Jonathan Mooney. I was very indifferent going into reading this book because I wasn't sure how I would like it. Although it has to deal with my major, this isn't the type of book that I am usually into reading. However, the more I read, the more I truly get into this book. I think it is inspiring how Mooney wants to talk to all different people with a variety of special needs. I think he wants them to know that they are not alone while at the same time he is assuring himself of that. This book truly displays that people with disabilities aren't all that different than people who don't. I think that this would be a great book to assign a classroom of students in general education because in today's society I feel as though there is a view of people with special needs that is incorrect. They are viewed as different, unusual, and people to avoid, when in fact it should be the opposite. Students with special needs inspire me as a student majoring in special education and I love that this book shows that through Mooney talking to people. The best part about this book for me is that Mooney didn't let his disability stop him from doing wonderful things in life, including what he is doing throughout the book.
